John Engelhardt has pursued his career in illustration and animation since the early 1990s, working for major players such as Walt Disney Australia, Anifex and The People’s Republic of Animation.

On top of a string of awards in art direction, production design and illustration, John was nominated for an AGDA Pinnacle Award for his series of illustrations for Mollydooker wine labels. He was additionally chosen by the Australian Graphic Design Association as a lead illustrator to showcase Adelaide artists in a recent campaign.

John works extensively with the Hilltop Hoods to create their trademark conceptual art. 
In 2006 John directed and undertook production design for the Hoods’ music video Clown Prince. The video was a finalist in the Belowground Music Video Awards, made Official Selection at the Cyprus International Film Festival, the SoundKilda Music Video Festival, the Indie Music Video Festival (CAN/USA) and won Best Music Video at the SA Short Screen Awards. 

In 2007 John gained an ARIA nomination for best cover art for the Hilltop Hoods’ Restrung album.

In 2009 John created 60 minutes of digitally illustrated and animated backgrounds that are currently screening onstage with the Hoods during their international State of the Art tour. John’s work as director, lead illustrator and animator has received rave reviews and incredible levels of audience appreciation. Most recently, John created, illustrated and directed the animated music video for the chart-topping Hilltop Hoods’ release The Light That You Burned

In 2010 John returned to the more tactile media of ink and paint, recently delivering an exclusive, commissioned portrait for Rupert Murdoch which hangs in Murdoch’s New York apartment.
